Papua New Guinea occupies the eastern half of the island, which it shares with Irian Jaya, which produces only a small amount of coffee. It's a world away from Java or Sumatra, geographically, culturally, and in most aspects of coffee production. It also doesn't utilize the wet parchment mill like many Indonesian coffees.
Papua's coffee-growing areas occupy a continuous mountain range, but are primarily distinguished as "Eastern Highlands" and "Western Highlands" coffees. The Western Highlands region is home to our PNG. Its provincial capital and central city is Mount Hagen. Its economy is heavily based on coffee. This region enjoys a cool, temperate climate with year-round rainfall, creating ideal microclimatic conditions for its cultivation.
